Counseling

In Early Childhood and Elementary School, the role of counseling is to monitor and assist children in the development and acquisition of necessary social, emotional, and learning skills and attitudes.  At this level, the guidance department puts a particular emphasis on the development of interpersonal skills, self-concept, decision-making and the awareness of learning.

Special Needs

All children develop differently; as a result, while developmental timing may vary from child to child, there are certain general guidelines that can be observed. The main idea of the Special Needs program is to give support to all the children that are facing problems in their schooling process, helping them achieve the necessary skills to be able to read, write a think mathematically, in English and Spanish.  Specialists frequently find solutions to children´s difficulties before real learning problems develop.  They are able to do this working individually o in groups when difficulties appear.  In few cases there may be a need to visit an external intervention specialist.

ESL / Reading Intervention Program

The ESL /Reading Intervention Program serves as an academic support for the Early Childhood Intervention Program. The ESL/Reading Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing specialized programs to work with students who are struggling in the regular classroom in language arts, either due to a limited proficiency in English and/or to learning difficulties. The ESL/Reading Program works jointly with the Special Needs Program to provide support in English for students who are having learning problems.

Community Service

Our school carries out a community service to daycares and other institutions in Cumbayá and Tumbaco. The prekinder students work with Guardería Ocañitas, located in the area of Tumbaco. This daycare serves approximately sixty children. Beginning this school year, students in kindergarten will begin working with Guardería FEVI, located in Cumbayá, which is home to around seventy children. First and second grade students are working with the Fundación Despertar, located in Tumbaco, which serves to seventy children, some with disabilities.

We make monthly visits to these institutions, and share a morning of games and entertainment, refreshments and an academic activity. After each visit, Colegio Menor leaves the materials used for the activity as a donation. Parents provide an economic contribution, the snack and physical help at the time of the visit.

At Christmas, we provide entertainment for the children at these schools. However, we also extend our support throughout the school year, not just in December.
